Therefore, according to the German Social Code II, children, adolescents and young adults in need are supported with education and participation benefits in order to offer them better opportunities for life and development. In addition to tutoring/learning support, lunchtime meals, transportation for pupils and school supplies, school trips can also be supported under certain conditions, for example.

If promotion is at risk and the school does not offer sufficient support, an application can be made for funding for extra tuition. In principle, children and young people who receive either unemployment benefit II, social assistance, social benefit, child supplement, housing benefit or benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act are entitled to benefits. In exceptional cases, tutoring can also be funded if the need cannot be met from the family’s own resources. Tutoring costs can even be funded over a longer period of time.

However, even if there is no dyslexia, families with low incomes are entitled to have the costs covered. Judgments have confirmed that such support may not be limited to two months, as a limitation would stand in the way of equal opportunities for children of long-term unemployed parents. The benefits for tutoring must be applied for in good time at the relevant job center.
