It can happen that the good grades hoped for on the interim report sometimes fail to materialize and disappointment spreads not only among parents but also among students after the half-year report. Now is the time to react sensibly. Scolding and accusations have never helped anyone at this point. On the contrary – parents should react calmly if they are surprised by their child’s poor report card.
Tutoring needed – because the semester is over!
First of all, the mid-year report is primarily information about the student’s current progress – in other words, it serves as a guide. Of course, one or, in the worst case, several bad grades can be very demotivating for the student. But look at it from the other perspective. Nothing is lost yet. It is just a step towards the goal, such as promotion to the next grade or the expected school-leaving certificate.
How parents can react sensibly to a poor half-year report
As a parent, stay calm and composed. Talk to your child. Try to understand and find out what could be the reason for the poor assessment. Getting angry, blaming and humiliating your child will not help. Comparisons with neighbors, siblings, friends or other pupils are also not useful. Threats of punishment, withdrawal of hobbies or even house arrest are also not helpful. You are more likely to achieve the exact opposite with these measures. Look on the bright side: your child still has half a school year ahead of them and therefore the chance to improve their grades.
Getting good grades with tutoring
Tutoring can help here. As outsiders, our professional tutors have a completely different view of your child. There can be many reasons for poor grades. Are they due to gaps in knowledge, a lack of motivation on the part of the pupil, a poor relationship between teacher and pupil, anxiety or a lack of learning techniques? Our tutors know their way around, take time for your child and work specifically with the student. After all, 88 percent of our tutoring students improve by at least one grade after just six months.
